Workplace harassment training is a strong tool for protecting victims from workplace harassers. As workers go through the training, they learn to identify harassment, signs of harassment in their surroundings, and how to respond to it.
Under CA law, employers need to train all their workers and supervisors every two years on harassment. 1-Hour Harassment Training For Workers is required for all non-supervisory employees. Supervisors need to go through 2 hours of instructions.
Workplace harassment can be of two types
- Hostile work environment: Such harassment results from unwanted and unwelcome workplace conduct from co-workers, supervisors, or customers that renders the workplace atmosphere intimidating, hostile or offensive for the victim. It could result from unwanted verbal or physical advances, intimidating behavior, or physical violence against the victim. Even use of derogatory words, signs, jokes, emails, and posters can create a hostile work environment.
- Quid Pro Quo harassment: Under the law, any employment action that is based upon an employee’s acceptance or rejection of ‘unwelcome’ sexual advances or requests for sexual favors is considered quid pro quo harassment.
Both forms of harassment are reportable offenses, and victims can file a complaint against such behavior.
